Project Description
Waikaia Gold Recovery Plant
Two years on from when the project first kicked off, a huge floating gold dredge barge is not only up and running, it’s actually processing more gold than originally planned. The gold dredge, designed and built for Waikaia Gold, is 12 metres wide and 26 metres long – as big as a two-storey building. Located 18 metres below ground level in a pit, the barge can process 250 cubic metres an hour via a 2.8-metre trammel screen. This screens the gold through a giant gold pan allowing anything smaller than 12mm to go through to be processed. The JLE team worked on the dredge’s switchboard and control room in Nelson for a month then two of our guys spent six weeks on-site on the Waikaia River, completing the installation. It’s state-of-the-art. Everything’s computer-controlled so the off-site owners can monitor progress remotely – their main office is over a kilometre away so it makes their job a whole lot easier. Overall this was a multi-million dollar project made possible by a number of companies working effectively together to ensure a positive result for the client.
