Project Description
JLE’s scope included collaboration on design with Easternwell to ensure conformance to API 500 and AS/NZ electrical and hazardous area standards, full procurement and construction of the electrical and automation and programming scope of this new 280,000 lbs mobile rig construction capable of operating at 20,000 feet depth. The design included an array of reporting functions and smarts achievable through the flexibility built into the PLC programming and automation design to allow latter changes to be made with ease. Automation was largely done through a Wireless network to reduce rig up and rig downtimes and hardwired connections, however, some critical operations were hardwired to provide additional backup. The full rig was assembled in Victoria, Texas USA with the rig Mud Tanks built in Denver, Colorado USA and other major components like the rig mast and catwalk traveling in from Canada. To meet the strictest of timelines and minimize costs to the client, JLE custom-built a fully air-conditioned Power House through careful design and reconfiguration of a 10-foot container, turning it into the electrical switchroom for the Rig with a heavy-duty plug-and-play design philosophy. This turnkey solution was fully fabricated in one of our New Zealand workshops by our mechanical and electrical team within a 6 week period before being transported to Texas to be bolted onto the skid and combined with other packages. A JLE team comprising of Hazardous Area Electricians, Instrumentation and automation engineers was present in Texas to install and commission all electrical works before the full packaged was shipped to the Easternwell Toowoomba yard where we carried out final commissioning, received Hazardous Area Audit sign off and achieved practical completion on time. This project required a very detail level of planning and a high degree of execution in all work faces including its design phases through the procurement, Client FATs, international freighting, installation, and commissioning teams. This project was completed with a zero LTI achievement.
